Eurosonic Noorderslag: the European Talent Exchange Program (ETEP) | Characteristics

Eurosonic Noorderslag is a springboard for hundreds of European artists and groups, which takes place in 40 different venues in Groningen city center from Wednesday to Friday in January each year. With a proven track record for breaking up emerging acts on the international live music circuit, the showcase event is responsible for igniting international careers with many compelling acts.

As the world realizes, the global pandemic has profoundly affected the live music industry. So when it finally made its comeback earlier this year, many international festivals made the difficult decision to cancel or postpone their events. on what would have been some fantastic opportunities to play the festival slots they had hoped or dreamed of offering.

Clash has selected five notable artists who have performed at ESNS this year:

Denise Chaila:

The Irish rapper born in Zambia and based in Limerick is a strong and distinct voice. With authentic lyrics and spoken word, the artist forged a unique path for art to be recognized in its country of origin and beyond. Chaila is the winner of the RTE Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year for the mixtape ‘Go Bravely’. His performance for ESNS revealed the energy and intelligence of his hip-hop literary brand.

Casper Clausen:

Danish frontman Efterklang, who resides in Lisbon, has decided to go it alone once again in terms of the album, and ‘Better Way’ portrays the remarkable result of his ambition. A collection of songs reflecting a rich and exploratory journey, Clausen’s blend of Krautrock, progressive rock and Avant-pop offers musical complexity and philosophical interpretations of life. A captivating performer, his ESNS set was curious and inspired, and I hope that’s an indication of what to expect next year.

Katy J Pearson:

The Swindon-born songwriter is on a dynamic trajectory that shows few signs of arrest. Earlier this year, she released ‘Peace and Offerings’, an EP that saw the singer gently experimenting with the jazz genre in new ways. A skillful author of catchy songs, things began to take shape and Pearson’s profession grew on a large scale.

Joe and the Shitboys:

A punk band like no other, the Faroese group identify as bisexual and don’t hesitate to wear their political heart on their sleeves, and their captivating and entertaining Eurosonic set was a hot topic. Whether it is their position on veganism, homophobia, misogyny, they communicate their views. Their debut album “The Reson For Hardcore Vibes (Again)” is the result of their hard work, and it will be intriguing to see what the next step is for the unpredictable quartet.

Jelani Blackman:

An eclectic voice in his field, the Ladbroke Grove-born rap artist continues to make waves, gaining much acclaim in response to live appearances as well as recorded material, with backing from some of Great Britain’s greatest DJs. Brittany. After high-profile concerts where he met artists like Gorillaz and Wolf Alice, and appearances at festivals like All Points east, Boardmasters and Sound City, he also performed his own show in London. His album “Unlimited” was released earlier this year and demonstrates his versatility and ability to do things in exciting ways, showing a lot of innovation in the process.
